LEEDS VS SOUTHAMPTON: PREDICTIONS
Not too long ago, both these sides looked safe from relegation and, in Southampton’s case, there was a push for European football on the cards. But Fulham’s revival has seen them close the gap on the rest of the table, putting Leeds and Southampton in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.
Leeds currently have the upper hand among these two sides, sitting in 12th with 32 points, 10 clear of Fulham as things stand. In their past six games, Leeds have won three times including a big victory over Leicester at the end of January, but more recently they have lost two in a row, bringing them down to their current position.
A win for Leeds would see them move into the top half of the table, leapfrogging Wolves and Arsenal, but defeat will see them overtaken by Southampton. Saints are one place and two points behind Leeds going into this fixture and just eight points clear of the relegation zone – a far cry from briefly occupying top spot in November.
Southampton are winless in seven Premier League games but at the weekend they ended a six-game losing streak, taking the lead and eventually holding Chelsea to a draw. It was a positive performance for Southampton, particularly in defence as they frustrated a Chelsea side that had won five consecutive matches across all competition.
LEEDS VS SOUTHAMPTON: MATCH STATS
Fans looking for some excitement in this game will be advised to ensure they do not miss a minute of the first half, with both Leeds and Southampton very busy before half-time. Twenty of Southampton’s 31 Premier League goals so far this season have been scored in the first half, the highest percentage of any team in the division (65%). At the same time, Leeds have conceded 26 of their 43 goals before half-time, a percentage (60%) second only to Arsenal for the worst in the Premier League.
Although Southampton ended their losing streak at the weekend, there is still a lot of work to be done for the Saints and Leeds will prove tough opposition. The Whites were unlucky in their defeat against Wolves on Friday, losing only to an unfortunate own goal from Illan Meslier in what was an otherwise good performance. These two sides may cancel each other out.
