The Suarez situation is growing complicated
Barcelona remain determined to remodel their squad and freshen up their dressing room, but they’re encountering more problems than they had anticipated in selling on their players.
Only Ivan Rakitic has left the club as a big name, while Arturo Vidal’s exit still hasn’t been fully completed and there are even more complications in Luis Suarez’s case.
The Uruguayan isn’t so set on the idea of moving to Juventus and he’s yet to reach an agreement with the Catalans to terminate his contract at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona have made it clear to the striker that he has to leave this transfer window, as Ronald Koeman told him during a phone call that he doesn’t feature in his plans.
“Suarez is, and has been in recent years, an important player,” said technical secretary Ramon Planes on Tuesday, when asked about the No.9.
“As I said in another appearance, we have to have a lot of respect for the players who have given so much to Barcelona.
“It is evident after what happened at the end of the season that we are in a process of changing, with a new coach and new ideas and we are working on that.
“We have to respect the players and their contracts.
“The market ends on October 5 and until then many things can happen.
“But with the utmost respect towards the players and the club.”
As things stand, though, Suarez doesn’t want to give up a single euro of the money he’s owed on his Barcelona contract.
Even if he does move on, his destination isn’t quite clear.
Talks with Juventus were at an advanced stage, but RAC1 reported on Tuesday that bureaucratic issues could halt the transfer.
In Italy, though, local media denied this was an issue and claim that any change in his stance is down to a personal change of heart.
Suarez’s future, then, is very much in the air.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if Koeman will leave the forward out of his squad – as he did against Nastic – when Barcelona face Girona in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
