The reaction to Casillas’ retirement: Ramos, Buffon, Iniesta
Iker Casillas announced his retirement on Tuesday, which has opened the floodgates to messages from around the world of football towards the former Real Madrid goalkeeper.
The 39-year-old will go down as one of the greats of the game for his success with Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, and his feats have not gone unnoticed from his high-profile peers.
“They say competition makes us better than others but not perfect faced with ourselves,” Gianluigi Buffon wrote on Twitter.
“Maybe this futile pursuit of perfection is what made us who we are.
“Thank you Iker, without you, everything would have been less meaningful.”
Andres Iniesta scored the goal that clinched the World Cup for Spain in 2010 which Casillas subsequently went on to lift as captain, and the former Barcelona midfielder was quick to send the goalkeeper as message.
“I wish you and your family the best in this new stage of your life,” Iniesta wrote on Twitter.
As well as with the national team, Sergio Ramos and Casillas enjoyed many memories together.
“Football gives thanks to you,” Ramos wrote.
“Forever a legend.”
Casillas joined Real Madrid at the age of nine, and won 19 titles with the club.
“Today one of the most important footballers in our 118 years of history calls it a day as a professional player, a player we love and admire, a goalkeeper who has made the Real Madrid legacy bigger with his work and exemplary behaviour both on and off the pitch,” Real Madrid wrote in a statement.
Some of Spain’s younger crop have also benefitted from Casillas’ presence and were keen to pay tribute.
“Proud and grateful to have been able to share many moments with you, I have been privileged. Thanks for all legend,” Oliver Torres, who played with Casillas at Porto, wrote on Twitter.
“Thanks for so much joy, legend,” Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio said.
