November 2010, shooting for a documentary on Jose Mourinho’s 10 years in coaching was coming to an end in Madrid.
An interview with Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the items left to record and it was eventually arranged for it to be done in his agent, Jorge Mendes’ house.
After Cristiano had left, Nuno Luz, who had led the interview with the Real Madrid forward, was having lunch with Mendes. The doorbell rang. It was Diego Maradona.
“You’re not going to interview him. If you do, I’ll kill you!” Mendes joked to Luz and, after Maradona had been introduced, the three ended up heading to Valdebebas.
That was where Cristiano, who had been warned by Mendes that Maradona was coming to the training ground, met the Argentine legend. The pair hit it off straight away, appearing close friends despite having not met before.
“It’s not right for me to sign a shirt for ‘El Dios’ Diego,” Mourinho said, rather embarrassed at his gift for Maradona. “You’re the No.1. I adore you.”
