Marc-Andre ter Stegen was evidently frustrated after Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat at home to Juventus on Tuesday night.
The loss saw the Catalans lose out on top spot in the group, having beaten Juventus 2-0 in Turin, and the goalkeeper didn’t hesitate to express his annoyance afterwards.
“A 3-0 [loss] always leaves things to improve,” Ter Stegen said. “We weren’t very prepared in some moments of the game.
“We made some mistakes that we cannot make. One thing is individual errors and another is the way you defend. They’re different things and have to be valued differently.
“We lack luck from time to time. As soon as they scored, we were lost and we’re in a phase wherein we have to be stronger.
“We have to do our homework and work hard. We have to be stronger from the beginning and to give a little more.”
Barcelona progress in second place despite the defeat, and the German is expecting a tough match in the round of 16.
“We had played well until today and won some tough matches,” Ter Stegen said. “We can’t call it a bad phase. We wanted to qualify in first, but it is what it is now.
“Whether you qualify first or second, there are no easy games in the second round of the Champions League.
“We have to focus on what we have to do. We have to improve.”
Now, the Catalans will turn their attention to LaLiga Santander, where they’ve had an even more complicated start to the season.
“We have to focus on LaLiga [Santander],” Ter Stegen added. “It’s the most important thing. We have to get maximum points.
“We have some matches in which we can pick up points and that’s our goal now.”
