Paris Saint-Germain are working to try to sign Kylian Mbappe to a new contract, something that MARCA reported on Saturday. The French club are not, therefore, looking to sign Sergio Ramos.
Ramos, whose Real Madrid contract expires in the summer of 2021, has been linked with a move to the Parc des Princes by some media, but that is not an option that’s on the table right now. They’d have to sell Neymar, who has already expressed his willingness to discuss a new contact, or Mbappe.
Even though PSG spent 222 million euros on Neymar and 180m euros on Mbappe, they don’t have unlimited funds. The Financial Fair Play rules mean they have to toe a certain line, especially now that some of their Qatar-related sponsorship deals have been reduced as they were believed to be inflated.
Ligue 1 clubs are also suffering more than most because the league ended prematurely last season. That saw Canal Plus refuse to pay the last instalment of their broadcast deal.
If PSG were to go after Ramos and pay a huge salary then they’d have to sell first. They just let Thiago Silva go for a similar reason, as the Brazilian centre-back had one of the biggest salaries at the club.
Silva also departed because of a desire to bring in more youth. Ramos, who’ll be 35 next summer, doesn’t fit that description. L’Equipe have also reported on the Ramos rumours and have also explained that PSG and Leonardo’s priority is not on the Spaniard.
“Those close to the player made the most of certain friendships in the Spanish media to mention a hypothetical offer from PSG, but this seems more like a strategy to put pressure on the Real Madrid directors,” L’Equipe explained. Ramos, then, is not the priority for PSG right now. Keeping Mbappe as the cornerstone of their project is.
