Jose Mourinho has confirmed Harry Kane is targeting a return to fitness as early as next week with the striker in contention to play against Everton or Manchester City.
The striker suffered a double ankle injury in Spurs’ 3-1 defeat by Liverpool last week with Spurs initially fearing he was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
But Mourinho said the 27-year-old’s recovery is progressing well and predicted he will be able to play a part in the FA Cup fifth-round tie with Everton next Wednesday or the following league match against Man City.
‘Good progress, he’s happy with the progress and of course we’re happy too,’ said the Tottenham boss.
‘I think it’s not a very optimistic thing to say next week he should be playing, it will be just a consequence of his good evolution.
‘So we’re happy. We were scared when it happened but next week we play Everton and (Manchester) City at the weekend. I believe for one of these matches he should be back.’
Kane is Tottenham’s leading scorer with 19 goals in all competitions this season.
The forward has also contributed 14 assists and has formed a formidable partnership with Heung-min Son.
Mourinho’s side are looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Chelsea at home on Thursday.
Spurs were beaten 1-0 by Brighton on Sunday in Kane’s absence and now sit six points outside the top four.
Thomas Tuchel’s side can leapfrog them into sixth place if they take all three points in north London.
The Blues got their first win under their new boss against Burnley on Sunday after a 0-0 draw in his opening game with Wolves.
