Man Utd transfer round-up: Cavani poised for United move as Lukaku warns against striker
The transfer deadline looms large and despite having hoped to build on a strong end to last season, Man United have struggled to make progress in the transfer market.
Thus far, they have made just one senior signing in Donny van de Beek, while moves for Alex Telles, Jadon Sancho, and others have either stalled, slowed, or been scuppered entirely, while fans grow increasingly frustrated at the lack of transfer movement the club has shown throughout the summer months.
Meanwhile, performances on the pitch have left a lot to be desired. United lost to Crystal Palace in their season opener.
They were then extremely fortunate to squeeze past Brighton after they were largely outplayed. Both outings only confirmed the need to spend.
And so, with supporters baying for investment, Solskjaer hoping to further build his squad, and the deadline now looming large, the pressure is on United to make some much-needed moves.
Here is a round-up of the latest Manchester United transfer rumours…
Lukaku plays down need for striker
With United’s lack of transfer activity upsetting a large portion of the fanbase, former striker Romelu Lukaku, who completed a permanent exit to Inter Milan last summer, has played down the team’s need for a new centre-forward.
“If you buy another striker, what are you going to do with Anthony Martial? He’s now being the No 9 at a great club,” he told the Times.
“Give him the full season to confirm what he did last year instead of bringing in someone big to disrupt the chemistry in the dressing room.
“Then you have Mason’s transition that is going to happen any time soon from right-wing to No 9, and Mason is a killer. I’ve seen him first hand. He’s got something.”
Cavani set for United move
Sadly for Lukaku it looks as though his old club have no plans on listening to his thoughts on a new striker, as veteran Edinson Cavani is set to sign for United on a two-year deal.
The 33-year-old has been a free agent since his release by PSG at the end of last season.
Cavani looked on his way to Atletico Madrid, before then seemingly being set for Benfica until a deal collapsed.
Now United have swooped to sign the forward on a whopping £200,000-per-week wage.
Dan James a candidate for the exit
Solskjaer has not given up hope that United can sign Jadon Sancho. The Borussia Dortmund winger has been the club’s priority throughout the summer window, but meeting Dortmund’s £108 million valuation has been challenging and, after the English international joined up with the Dortmund squad to start the season, it is now expected that he will remain in Germany.
Nevertheless, Solskjaer would like to raise funds to make an offer that tests Dortmund’s resolve, and he is reportedly willing to offload current players to do so.
One such player is Dan James. According to ESPN, Solskjaer is happy to sell the Welsh international thanks to the emergence of Anthony Martial as a centre-forward and Mason Greenwood as a starting option on the right flank.
The report claims that Solskjaer does not believe that James can establish himself as a first-team player and would sanction a £25 million sale to Leeds United.
Ed Woodward, however, reportedly believes that selling a player just a year after signing them would paint a negative image of the club, despite making a £7 million profit.
