Madrid hits out at VAR: There was a foul on Asensio before Valencia's second goal! 1

Real Madrid fell to a 4-1 defeat against Valencia on Sunday night, a loss where all four of the Valencia goals had an element of VAR involved. For Emilio Butragueno, Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations, not all of the calls were correct. He felt that when VAR took a look at Los Che’s second goal, to check that it had crossed the line, there should have also been a look at a potential foul on Marco Asensio.

“The match wasn’t bad at the start and we were better and comfortable in the first half an hour, going ahead on the scoreboard,” he said in an interview with Movistar+.

“Then there was an accidental play for their first penalty and they equalised, before a second goal where VAR intervened. We understand it’s there to intervene, but maybe it should look at the whole move from the beginning and there’s a foul on Asensio.

“In the second half the second penalty arrived. In my personal opinion, I thought they were going to call a freekick in our favour. They saw it a different way and that made it difficult, even more so with the accident for the next penalty. It’s a shame because we were doing well in the match.”

Asked about Zinedine Zidane and his team selection, the director didn’t want to comment on the sporting matter. Zidane has to make the decisions and he has a great squad,” Butragueno said.

Finally, Butragueno was asked for an update on Karim Benzema’s state, after the Frenchman had to limp off with an injury. It looks like he has a small muscular injury and we hope it’s not serious,” he said. “We have two weeks now for him to try to recover during the international break. We hope he can be there for the next match.”
