Messi, the king of dribbling
Although he didn’t get his hands on the LaLiga Santander trophy, Lionel Messi broke a number of records in the 2019/20 season.
Not only did the Argentine score 25 goals, which earned him his seventh Pichichi trophy, and record 21 assists, which is a new LaLiga record, but he’s became the dribbling king of Spain again.
The Barcelona captain made 182 successful dribbles in LaLiga Santander, which is almost twice as many as Nabil Fekir, who came second in the standings with 98.
Further back, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (86 successful dribbles) and Fabian Orellana (69) complete the top four in the charts.
Messi retakes the dribbling crown in LaLiga Santander after losing out to Celta Vigo’s Sofiane Boufal last season, finishing 10 dribbles behind the Moroccan’s tally of 144.
In the last 10 years, Messi has held the title of LaLiga Santander’s best dribbler six times.
This season’s total of 182 successful dribbles is the forward’s third best since the 2008/09 season and just four behind his best of 186 in 2010/11.
No player in Europe has completed as many successful dribbles as Messi in the last 12 years.
If there’s one team who have suffered most at the hands, or feet, of the Barcelona No.10, it’s Atletico Madrid.
Messi completed 16 successful dribbles against Diego Simeone’s side this season to add to his total of 130 against Los Rojiblancos since 2008/09 – the most of any opponent.
