James Rodriguez nears Real Madrid exit

Six years have passed since James Rodriguez joined Real Madrid for almost 80 million euros as the 23-year-old star of the 2014 World Cup, but his time in the Spanish capital is coming to an end.

There have been some highs and many lows which have led to an exit having won nine titles, including two Champions League trophies, two LaLiga Santander victories and two Club World Cups. He also spent two seasons out on loan with Bayern Munich.

Carlo Ancelotti was the coach who best understood and believed in James, fielding him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema or Gareth Bale.

His quality, however, was unforgettable as he scored some remarkable goals like the overhead kick against Real Betis, a volley against Granada and other incredible strikes against Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna.

Another memorable moment was an impressive pass to Cristiano Ronaldo in a 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League group stages in October 2014.

With Zidane, he lost importance and in the 2016/17 season, and was just a rotation option which came to a head when he was left out of the squad to face Juventus in the Champions League final.

James decided to move on and was reunited with Ancelotti at Bayern Munich where he had a difficult start but settled and thrived under the Italian’s successor Jupp Heynckes to win the Bundesliga.

After an injury-hit second season and a poor relationship with the next boss of the German giants, Niko Kovac, Bayern opted not to make the loan permanent for 42 million euros.

The Colombian returned to Spain and had interest from Napoli and Atletico Madrid but ended up staying at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

This past season has been a frustrating one for James, with few chances and many injuries, leaving him out of the team dynamic resulting in a sad ending to his six years at Real Madrid.
