Chelsea’s signing of Kai Havertz was one of the deals of the summer. The Blues beat a number of competitors to land the Bayer Leverkusen prodigy, who was one of the hottest prospects in European football.
The Premier League club spent 80 million euros to sign him, making him the most expensive transfer of the summer, ahead of Arthur Melo, Victor Osimhen and Ruben Dias.
But a few months on, the 21-year-old hasn’t hit the form expected of him in London.
Havertz’s numbers in the Premier League aren’t great. With two assists and just one goal in 14 games, he has come in for criticism. Frank Lampard hasn’t managed to get the best out of a player who looked to be a unique talent during his time in Germany.
The season isn’t even at its midway point yet, though, and Havertz has had to handle a harsh bout of coronavirus, but he’s started a lot slower this year than before.
He’s still able to give more, and he’s still settling into a side that saw a complete overhaul over the off season.
Lampard and Chelsea have to do all they can to protect Havertz in order to allow him to fulfil his potential and become one of Europe’s best players.
