The winger had to be taken off in the first half hour of Real Madrid’s Saturday night defeat to Alaves, with this his seventh injury since arriving in the Spanish capital in the summer of 2019.

After an inconclusive ultrasound test on Sunday, Hazard learned the results of an MRI scan on Monday and it has been confirmed that he has a muscular issue.

“Following tests carried out today on our player, Eden Hazard, by Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury in the rectus femoris muscle of his right leg,” a Real Madrid statement released at Monday lunchtime said. “His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

This injury means he’ll have to watch on from a distance for Shakhtar Donetsk away this Tuesday, Sevilla away on Saturday, Borussia Monchengladbach at home on December 9 and Atletico Madrid at home on December 12.

These are crucial matches and this is a huge loss, considering that Hazard played well against Villarreal and Inter. He then started well against Alaves too, playing for a third game in a row, but now he has suffered this setback.

According to Kris Van Crombrugge, the head of the Belgian national team’s medical services, the stress that Hazard’s repeated injuries are causing him is taking a toll and making it even more likely that he’ll go down injured again.

Even when he has been fit in terms of injuries, Hazard also had to miss a couple of weeks because he contracted COVID-19. The winger certainly hasn’t had much luck since his big money move from Chelsea in the summer of 2019.
