Getafe vs Barcelona: Tireless Messi
An intense week is coming for Barcelona who are set to play three games in seven days commencing with their tough trip to Madrid to face Getafe on Saturday at 21:00 CEST.
Ronald Koeman could rest several players for the clash at the Estadio Coliseum yet, as the Dutchman has made clear, the only player who will not take part in any rotation policy is Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona captain particularly enjoys playing against Getafe given he scored a Diego Maradona-esque goal back on April 18, 2007, in the Copa del Rey when he ran over 55 metres with the ball, dribbling past half of the opposition and netting a spectacular goal.
However, Messi has also been superb in LaLiga Santander against Getafe, having scored 13 and assisted another 12 goals in 22 games. Despite having played the full 90 minutes in two Argentina matches over the last week, Messi will be in the starting line-up once again.
Just a few tweaks
Jordi Alba will miss the game due to injury and Sergino Dest could take his spot in the starting XI, while Samuel Umtiti and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen are also both sidelined through injuries. The player who will start without any doubt is Messi as Koeman has made clear.
“I think Messi can play every game,” said Koeman. “I talk to the players and then we decide, but Leo has been playing a very tight schedule for many years.
“Also, if he doesn’t play he’s more tired. If there is an injury issue, it’s something else.”
Barcelona will play three LaLiga Santander matches in the next 15 days, against Getafe, Real Madrid and Alaves, as well two in the Champions League against Juventus and Dinamo Kiev and Koeman is expected to rotate his team and rest some players.
Nine years have passed since Getafe achieved their last victory against Barcelona at home. Many things have changed for Jose Bordalas’ team, which has had a long break.
The players want to bounce back after their defeat against Real Sociedad and the game against Barcelona presents a huge opportunity to do so as they have yet to beat them since returning to LaLiga Santander.
Bordalas will have all his men at his disposal including Marc Cucurella who picked up a minor knock during the international break, as well as Mauro Arambarri and Damian Suarez who have just returned from Uruguay duty.
