A funeral parlor worker has been fired after images of himself posing next to Diego Maradona’s body circulated online.
Maradona’s coffin has been on display in the Casa Rosada presidential palace in Buenos Aries following his tragic death on Wednesday, aged 60.
Sepelios Pinier, who the worker represented, confirmed the man has been sacked for his conduct.
One of the images show the man posing with a thumbs-up next to Maradona’s body.
Sepelios Pinier manager Matias Picon insists the man was part of an outside party, tasked with carrying the coffin.
“My father is 75 years old and he is crying, I am crying, my brother too, we are destroyed,” he begun per TN.
“He is not an employee here, he is a third party who only helped us load the drawer because it weighs a lot. The family chose a cedar box that is very difficult to transport and that is why we summoned it, just to carry the box.
Diego Picon then explained: “The three outsourced employees that we call and appear in the images we took out their cell phones in the morgue.
“We gave them back to them when all the work had been finished and at that moment, which was when the police called me to organize the transfer, that’s when they did that.”
Maradona’s lawyer Matias Morla launched a scathing attack on Twitter and said he will ‘personally take care’ of who took the photograph.
“Given the viralization of an image of Diego on his deathbed, I am going to personally take care of finding the scoundrel who took that photograph. All those responsible for such an act of cowardice will pay,” he wrote.
A flurry of Boca Juniors fans, who Maradona had two stints at in his career, threw their jerseys over his coffin which was adorned with the Argentina flag.
Shouts of “Te amo [I love you], Diego!” echoed throughout the crowd and many tears were shed.
President Alberto Fernandez has declared there will be three days of national mourning for Maradona.
“You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of all. Thanks for having existed, Diego. We will miss you for a lifetime,” he said in a statement.
