Chelsea are reportedly open to selling centre backs Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori in January and FC Barcelona are the front runners for Rudiger so far due to reports from newspapers.
The centre backs have played just one Premier League game each so far this season, with Frank Lampard persevering with the partnership of veteran Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma.
With Rudiger eyeing a spot in Germany’s squad for next summer’s European Championships and Tomori keen to kickstart his first-team career again, Lampard is open to allowing both players to leave the club next month, according to ESPN.
The report details that Lampard is keen to reduce the number of defenders in his first-team squad.
Rudiger looked set to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer but despite reported interest from Roma and Barcelona, the 27-year-old stayed put.
Germany boss Joachim Low recently admitted that Rudiger is still looking to leave Chelsea in order to play regular football.
‘I was in constant contact with Rudiger, he was keeping me in the loop,’ Low said.
‘He had three or four options over the weekend but unfortunately nothing materialised – he can try again in the winter.
‘He tried everything to leave Chelsea because the European Championship is very important to him.
‘I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter. He’s doing everything he can to stay in his best form.’
As for Tomori, who also played under Lampard on loan at Derby in the 2018-19 season, a loan move may be a realistic option for the 22-year-old.
After being handed his chance under Lampard early last season, Tomori has fallen down the pecking order and Newcastle are one club keeping an eye on his situation.
Should both Rudiger and Tomori leave in January, that would leave Andreas Christensen as the only back-up centre half
