Barcelona have to renew Ter Stegen at whatever cost
When the time comes around to choose the best footballer in the world, there is almost never unanimity on who is the best goalkeeper around.
But there tends to be consensus when selecting the candidates. The winner will be one of Jan Oblak, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Manuel Neuer or Thibaut Courtois. So, it seems logical that Barcelona should consider renewing the contract of their German goalkeeper. At 28 and after six seasons, Ter Stegen is one of the best on the planet and a fundamental piece of this Barcelona side.
How can it be done with Barcelona’s financial situation?
Negotiations began at the end of last year and the Camp Nou offices have described the situation as “extremely tough” as Ter Stegen’s representatives want him to be the world’s highest paid goalkeeper.
Neuer renewed with Bayern Munich in May to earn 7.5 million euros per year, Oblak earns 10 million euros net, while Courtois renewed in 2018 and earns as much as Neuer per season.
Ter Stegen’s 2017 renewal has seen him paid eight million euros per year. His new contract, which will be announced soon, will see him earn no less than 18 million euros net until 2025, more than doubling his current salary. His pay will increase gradually, so that the first two seasons will rise gradually but will be significant in 2023/24 and 2024/25.
With that astronomical salary, Ter Stegen will overtake David de Gea’s 15 million euro salary to become the world’s best-paid goalkeeper.
Off the market
Barcelona recently leaked that Ter Stegen began by asking for 24 million euros but that was not something that could be done, especially after the coronavirus pandemic.
The financial situation has put Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board in an advantageous position in negotiations and not the elite players. Meanwhile, the club have announced a salary cut of 30 percent because they cannot pay the 840 million euros the squad invoice.
