Barcelona are preparing to find a low-cost centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window, according to Diario Sport
Manager Ronald Koeman has been told he can sign a new defender to add more competition for current options Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique and Ronald Araujo.
The Catalan club are expecting Samuel Umtiti to leave in January with interest from across Europe in the French defender.
Due to the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, Barcelona have found themselves strapped for cash in recent months – meaning Koeman will have limited funds to find a new centre-back.
Earlier in the season, the club requested that players take a pay cut to help put a dent in their losses of over £200million during the summer months.
Manchester City defender Eric Garcia is Barcelona’s priority target but negotiations are not going well with the Premier League club.
It is likely that the Spaniard will have to wait until next summer when his contract expires to return to the LaLiga giants.
Barcelona have been in constant contact with the defender, who is said to be keen on a return to the Nou Camp, but they are also looking at alternative options with reinforcements needed sooner than next summer.
Another target now on Barca’s radar is Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, who was close to a Stamford Bridge exit last summer.
The Spanish side are now upping the ante in their pursuit of the German who would be open to a move.
Joel Matip is another name that has come up for Barcelona, but it is believed that Liverpool would be against selling him in the upcoming window with their current defensive issues.
Other targets include Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi, Roma’s Federico Fazio, Fiorentina’s German Pezzella and Milan’s Mateo Musacchio.
